In 1986 labor activist Ron Carver initiated an effort to place Ralph's
paintings in public spaces where the very people who are subjects of
these works could view them. Ralph said, "When I started to paint, my main
objective was to paint pictures of life that were real, of working people
struggling and trying to survive in the city, yet trying to get some joy
out of life, and to get working people to see them. . . .I didn't paint
my paintings to hang in some rich guy's living room. My paintings are
about people and they should be seen by people, not hidden away." To date
over fifteen of Ralph's paintings are on display in airports, union
buildings, city halls, subways, museums, and libraries.
